Prep for Less: Save and Splurge

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the blog! Finding your style and cultivating your closet to match can be challenging on a budget. Any style can be expensive if you aren’t smart on where you spend your money. The preppy style is notoriously known for being way more expensive than others, which isn’t always true. In other styles, brands such as Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters aren’t cheap either! I save money by buying the basic pieces that are lesser quality at stores such as Old Navy, J. Crew Factory, and Marshalls. For more expensive, classic items such as a monogram necklace or a Lilly Pulitzer shift, I invest in the quality. It’s all about finding the right balance to keep both your closet and wallet happy!

When it comes to saving money, I first suggest to buy the basics. You can find great items at Target, TJMaxx, and Old Navy. Many stores sell chino shorts that match all your fun tops! I usually outgrow mine each year so I get mine at Old Navy instead of J. Crew. If you’re like me and break/loose sunglasses often, I recommend finding a cute and inexpensive pair instead of buying Ray Bans. As the seasons change, so do my purses! I like to have a variety to change up my look so I purchase mine at Stein Mart to save money.

Love the J. Crew style but not the prices? Then shop J. Crew Factory! A much cheaper alternative to the same looks you love! Plus they are always giving 50% off the store! Subscribe to all your favorite stores by email so you never miss a sale! Although seeing all the emails flowing into your inbox daily can sometimes be overwhelming, going through them every few days will help you stay on top of them!

Lilly dresses are an essential piece in a preppy girl’s wardrobe. A few of the more expensive stores, such as Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines, run sales only a few times per year. Plan and save for those sales so you can get the most for your money. Instead of purchasing at full price throughout the year, try to hold out for the sale! I know that I could care less if it was “last summer’s” Lilly print- if I like the print, I like it!

There are some things that just about never go on sale and those are the pieces I’d rather invest in and pay for the quality. For example, my Birkenstocks are a pretty penny but they are the only cute pair of sandals I could find that are supportive for my feet! I wear them almost everyday when it’s warm and have gotten so much use out of them. Same goes for a nice pullover that will keep you warm. If you know you’ll wear it often and for a long time than in my opinion it’s worth splurging on!

The preppy style is known for being timeless and never going out of style. Many accessories are classic pieces that you’ll be able to wear for years and years. Jewelry such as pearls and monograms will last you forever so I’m okay with spending more on them for the higher quality. I usually find dupes for trendier pieces at Charming Charlie or Target. It gives you the same look for less. When purchasing from Kendra Scott, use a friend or relatives birthday month for 50% off your purchase. I’ve gone in with my dad and grandpa and it was as simple as showing their IDs for the discount!

Obtaining the preppy wardord doesn’t have to break the bank. It all depends on how and where you spend your money! Always lookout for sales and be smart with your money!
